Concerto Anacapa
For Piano and Orchestra

This is my most recent and largest work—a concerto for piano and orchestra. It has many traditional elements, but does diverge in some ways from 19th century typical structure. There are three movements in Dm, Dm and Am, in 4/4, 3/4 and 4/4 respectively. Total time is about 12 minutes.

The first movement (Alleghretto gentile) is structured roughly ABCDA', starting very quietly, then building, then quieting again, recapping the main theme at the end.

The second movement (Larghetto dolce) is slow and in the traditional 3/4 meter. It remains in Dm, and is meant to immediately follow the first movement, almost as a postscript. It has a fugue-like middle section with just 5 instruments in conversation, and closes with a recap of the opening mood.

The third movement (vivace) is in Am, opening with a pulse of the low strings in pizzicato & tuba, then a solo bassoon enters with a melody, and slowly builds. Eventually the orchestra and piano leap in with several short episodes leading to an energetic finale.
